Living With Bunions

Want to know how to keep your bunions from ruining your day?

Bunions are common foot deformities that can cause the joint at the base of the big toe to stick out. While bunions can be painful they aren’t the end of the world, especially if you catch them early and put certain lifestyle modifications and habits in place. In fact, as our North Las Vegas, NV, podiatrist Dr. David Biesinger can tell you, most people can live with bunions without ever needing to resort to surgery. Would you like to avoid bunion surgery? Here’s how,

Pain Medications

Opt for over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen that can help keep swelling and pain down. If you find that OTC medications aren’t strong enough, our podiatrist can prescribe a stronger medication.

Heat Therapy

While some people may find ice therapy to be helpful, in many cases, heat can be a great way to reduce bunion-related pain. A nice warm Epsom salt foot soak can be a great way to alleviate stiffness, achiness and pain.

Proper Footwear

If you caught your bunion in its early stages, then wearing the proper shoes may be all you’ll need to improve your condition. This means choosing shoes that won’t rub against and put pressure on your bunion, as well as shoes that offer support and don’t have heels above 2 inches tall.

Orthotics

Bunion pads and prescription orthotics can also be placed in the shoes to take pressure off the bunion and to reduce symptoms that occur as a result of wearing shoes or performing certain movements. Talk to our podiatrist about whether orthotics could help you.

Could it be time for bunion surgery?

It’s also important to know when it might be time to consider bunion surgery. Of course, this isn’t a decision you will make alone. Our North Las Vegas, NV, podiatrist has been providing advanced podiatric surgeries to people dealing with bunions, hammertoes, arthritis and more. When you come into our practice, Dr. Biesinger will perform an extensive evaluation to determine if surgery is the best solution. Surgery may be right for you if,

  • You are dealing with persistent and severe foot pain and/or swelling
  • You experience pain that limits mobility
  • You aren’t able to perform your everyday activities and routine because of your bunion
  • You aren’t getting relief through non-surgical treatment options
  • The bunion is so large that it’s causing the big toe to cross over the smaller toes

Dr. Biesinger has provided award-winning podiatric treatments including foot and ankle surgery for more than 16 years. If you are looking for a podiatrist that can thoroughly treat your bunion pain, and know when to recommend surgery, then call Centennial Foot & Ankle at (702) 852-2402 to schedule your no-risk consultation.
